Joy Francis is Executive Director of Words of Colour, and co-founder of the award-winning Synergi Collaborative Centre where she launched the UK’s first Pledge to reduce ethnic inequalities in mental health systems and co- developed the Creative Spaces model.
The former journalist and academic co-authored the UK’s first survey on ethnic minority service users for Mind in 1997 with Melba Wilson, was a consultant on national mental health campaigns and policy initiatives, including the David ‘Rocky’ Bennett Inquiry and Delivering Race Equality, and was appointed the Media Liaison Lead for the Hillsborough Inquests and Camber Sands Inquests by leading civil rights law firm Birnberg Peirce.
In 2022, Joy was elected to the Royal Society of Literature as an Honorary Fellow.
